Why it is hard finding the right band? Most people don’t know where to start finding the right band for their event. We surveyed 200 people recently and only 2 knew where to start - and that was something like: “My Uncle Bob knows someone in band” (but I haven’t seen them!). The other said: “ I saw a band at a wedding last year but I can’t remember their name”! If you search Google, how do you know if that band is the right band, or good enough quality? If you call a Booking Agency - they are on a commission charged on top of the band fee, so their incentive is to drive the price higher. Some charge as much as 30% on top of the band fee - so if you are paying say $2500 for a band, the agent could be taking up to $750 - and the band has to share $1750. Plus most agencies list too many acts - how on earth do you trawl through them all and find the right act? Most agents push the acts they know they can make the most commission on. (They say to the act - if you accept a 25% commission - we will get you more gigs!). This may not result in the best band for your needs. If you search yourself - how will you know if the band is good enough, will play the right music and engage your audience? What do they cost, what do they need, how long will they play for, will they turn up? So many things to think about. It all sounds too hard. There are some acts going around where they throw together bands from a pool of musicans ad hoc - some musos don’t even know the other musos until they arrive at the gig! It’s a real ‘lucky-dip’ as to what you get and what songs they may know collectively. It’s all too hard - how can I make the right decision - who can I trust - gosh Eddie I need to phone a friend!
